(Birmingham, Alabama) – Though it was not the finish they hoped for, Canada has claimed the silver medal at the 2013 Americas Zone Qualification Tournament and have qualified for the 2014 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships.
Despite playing a close game with the USA in the preliminary rounds, Canada struggled against the American team in the gold medal game from the beginning. A series of early turnovers caused Canada to quickly fall behind and by the end of the first quarter they were down 19-9. Though the veteran line of David Willsie, Garett Hickling, Trevor Hirschfield and Patrice Simard made up some ground in the second quarter, Canada could never mount a strong offensive charge and they lost 63-40.
“This was not the performance we wanted,” said Head Coach Kevin Orr after the game. “The good news is that we’ve qualified for the World Championships like we planned, but we’ll have to come together as a team to figure out why we underperformed today.”
The 2014 IWRF World Wheelchair Rugby Championships will take place in Odense, Denmark from August 1st to 10th, 2014.
