Schedule and Teams Announced for the 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament

(Richmond, BC – May  9) BC Wheelchair Sports Association is proud to announce the teams selected to attend the 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament, along with the event schedule and ticket information.

Canada Cup will take place from June 23 – 26 at the Richmond Olympic Oval. It is the last stop for teams before the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The teams selected to attend are:
• Canada - #1
• USA #2
• Japan #3
• Australia #4
• Great Britain #5
• Sweden #6
• Switzerland #14

This year’s Canada Cup will have a unique schedule. Instead of the usual playoff format, all teams will play each other in a round robin. The tournament will culminate with a marquee game between wheelchair rugby’s biggest rivals: Canada and the USA. When they last played at the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games, Canada came from behind to beat the USA in the fourth quarter and qualify for Rio.

"In this new format, no one can hide. Everyone has to play every other team," said Canada Cup Tournament Chair Gail Hamamoto. "The results will impact world rankings, so there's a lot on the line. We can expect to see some amazing wheelchair rugby.

The 2016 Canada Cup will begin on Thursday, June 23rd. Canada will take on Sweden at 7 pm. The tournament will culminate in a Canada-US showdown on Sunday, June 26th at 2:30 pm.
