(Melbourne, AUS) -- Team Canada has won the Fierce 4 Wheelchair Rugby Tournament in Melbourne, Australia. The team went undefeated against several of the top Australian club teams and beat New South Wales, which featured Australian superstar Ryley Batt, in the gold medal game 62-59.
“The games were a good test for players as they continue to make their case to be selected to the team for the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games,” said High Performance Director Andy Van Neutegem.
Trevor Hirschfield was named MVP and Patrice Simard received Best 1.5.
Next, Team Canada will face off against the Australian national team in a five-game series. Australia is currently ranked number one in the world after defeating Canada at the 2014 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships last summer in Denmark. Canada hopes that their Australian tour will give them valuable game experience that will translate into a gold medal at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
The Australian tour is the last major event for Team Canada before the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games. The roster that will be competing at the Parapan Am Games will be releases shortly.
