Podium Club applications have now been accepted for the 2013 – 2014 season. Clubs are eligible for funding to host competitions, travel to competitions, participate in recruitment and talent identification, and support their training environment.
For the first year, the Podium Club committee has moved some of the pillars of development for Wheelchair Rugby to the Provincial Sport Organizations. PSOs can apply for development in the areas of Coach Development, Officials Development, and Hosting of Major Competitions.
This is the fourth year of the Podium Club program and CWSA is very proud of the development the program encourages and supports. Based on the needs identified by the national Long Term Athlete development Plan developed in 2008, the program supplies funding to the pillars of the sport that need development. This funding allocation is reviewed each year with small changes being made as required.
Canada now has 18 clubs implementing wheelchair rugby programs to varying degrees. All clubs are responsible for their own organization and development and the level of professionalism within each club is growing by leaps and bounds.
“Each year Podium Club inputs between $60,000 and $70,000 directly to the clubs for their development and it is definitely money well spent,” said National Development Director Duncan Campbell. “The more clubs we can develop, the more players will be recruited and enter the sport at a proper level. At the end of the day, this program is helping us to discover the next national team star.”
